Strategic opportunities assessment for Data61’s Cyber-Physical Systems
Robotics, computer vision, cybernetics and sensing systems are already helping businesses and governments unlock socioeconomic benefits by enabling productivity gains, cost efficiencies, quality improvements and safer working environments. For Australia, a crucial part of the realisation of these benefits is Data61’s Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) program. The research program has one of the largest concentration of researchers and engineers in the broad field of robotics in Australia and has delivered world-class research and development for business and industries both in Australia and overseas.
This strategic research partnership with CSIRO will identify and present the most promising market opportunities for the main research projects and technologies developed by the CPS program. Four research groups will be involved in the assessment:
- Robotics and Autonomous Systems
- Cybernetics
- Distributed Sensing Systems
- Imaging & Computer Vision
Research includes quantitative and qualitative assessments of the group’s resources and capabilities, followed by a systematic analysis of key markets segments relevant to each research group in the short, medium and long terms. The internal capability assessment will be matched with the external market assessment in order to identify a number of strategic opportunities to unlock value from the groups’ technologies and research capabilities.
Insights will inform the development and implementation of a program-level innovation strategy supporting and augmenting the growth of the individual research groups and the entire CPS program.
Reducing uncertainty and facilitating decision making over the long term will support the CPS program to leverage its established capabilities to:
- capitalise on short-term opportunities in sizeable markets;
- enhance existing capabilities with new capabilities to capitalise on growing market opportunities;
- extend capabilities that will become relevant for long-term opportunity creation.
