The University of Queensland Australian Institute for Business & Economics, in partnership with Credit Suisse, has published a new report examining potential causes of overall wage stagnation. Demographic trends in relation to workforce age could evidently be of significance. In particular, statistics indicate a correlation between the growth in the relative share of older workers within the Australian labour market and the relative slow-down in wages growth observed in the Australian economy over the last two.

Additionally, the report outlines growing income inequality between the highest quintile and the average household, and the subsequent effect this is having on consumer spending. Namely, in an attempt to maintain their standard of living, the Australian middle class is increasingly turning to debt financing.
